Nonprofit Champion: Nik from Fox Valley Literacy Council

The Fox Valley Literacy Council is a nonprofit organization located in Applewood, WI, that provides client-focused adult literacy education to people in the Fox Cities area.

Nik Shier, Volunteer & Communications Coordinator for Fox Valley Literacy Council, recently shared with us her most successful fundraising story.

Nik from Fox Valley Literacy Council

What would you consider to be your most successful campaign?

Nik:  Our campaign focused on using Leap Day, an extra 24 hours to raise money to purchase supplemental materials for our clients.

What would you attribute to this great success?

Nik:  Firstly, it was easy to donate. I also posted a physical representation of the progress across social media all day. We were raising funds for books, so the day began with an empty bookshelf. As the day went on, an update was posted with additional books on the shelf, representing what we had raised.

Walk us through your plan of action for this campaign:

Nik:  This particular campaign was only planned a few days in advance. We set up the campaign, altered stakeholders to share it, and updated our progress.

Of the donors for this campaign, about what percentage would you say were repeat donors versus new?

Nik:  About 40% were repeat donors and 60% were new (so far) one time donors.

How did you recruit your fundraising champions?

Nik:  We recruited our volunteer board members at their meeting before the campaign.

Was there anything you learned from this campaign that stood out as something you could implement again?

Nik:  I will definitely use a physical/visual representation of the donation’s impact and progress in the future.

What is your single best piece of advice for other nonprofits when it comes to launching a successful fundraising campaign?

Nik:  Set the time aside to focus on it while it’s happening.

Congratulations to Fox Valley Literacy Council on Your Fundraising Success!
