Kern County Celebrates Second Annual Giving Day, Give Big Kern 2017
On May 2nd, 2017, Kern County, California, celebrated its second annual Giving Day, Give Big Kern 2017.
“Give Big Kern is one day to celebrate the giving spirit of Kern County. It is designed to bring the county together as one community, raising dollars and volunteer hours for Kern County’s nonprofits through a 24-hour crowd-funding campaign.”
This 24-hour online fundraising challenge was hosted by Kern Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of growing community and growing philanthropy.
Giving Day Results
Last year, Give Big Kern 2016 brought in $176,957 in donations and 74,000 volunteer hours.
Give Big Kern 2017 brought in 327 volunteers, 14,844 volunteer hours, and $143,095 from 1,396 donors (2/3rds more donors from last year)!
Give Big Kern Prizes
This Giving Day utilized the power of prizes to help encourage heightened engagement, support, and fun! The prizes were as follows:
- $1,500 for the organization with the most donors
- $500 for the organization that raised the most dollars
- $1,000 for the organization with the most volunteers
- $500 for the most volunteer hours pledged
- $1,000 for an organization whose board members donated

Give Big Kern Leaderboards
Totals for Most Raised and Most Donors were updated in real-time and showcased on the Give Big Kern Leaderboards:
Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue topped the Give Big Kern Leaderboards for having the Most Raised, bringing in over $9,000!

Along with customizing their giving profile to reflect their nonprofit’s brand, this organization also provided five volunteer opportunities that supporters could sign up for throughout the Giving Day.
Habitat for Humanity Golden Empire topped the Leaderboards for having the Most Donors, with over 120 of them showing their support on during Give Big Kern!

This organization provided donation levels for supporters to choose from that explained how much each dollar amount would help pay for and had some successful fundraisers, a.k.a Fundraising Champions, who brought in funds on their behalf. They also included this informative video directly on their giving profile:
