GiveGab Team Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity
Last week, the GiveGab team joined in on a Habitat for Humanity volunteer opportunity at a build site in Trumansburg, NY. Armed with warm clothes and closed-toe shoes, we headed out early in the morning not knowing what to expect.
Work was in full swing when seven of us arrived on the site around 8:30 a.m. With the sun shining and the temperature climbing through the 40s, we knew it was going to be a good day to break a sweat. There were two homes being built, both situated on a quiet village road backing up to a creek. Since it was Election Day, many of the regular volunteers were trickling in from the polls and chatting about local politics.
By the time we signed in, vinyl siding was being measured, cut and installed, materials were being delivered, and a makeshift break room was being created in the living room of one of the homes in preparation for colder weather.
Once the gravel path was complete, we took a coffee break in the new break room, mingled with the local volunteers and chatted about the progress of the construction. We warmed up with hot coffee and homemade cookies and got to know the crew, most of whom were local, retired tradespeople who stay active by volunteering with Habitat.
After coffee, some of us moved inside to hang drywall while the rest stayed outside and continued the parging work. We wrapped up the morning shift, then headed to town to join the afternoon shift for lunch.
We can’t wait until the next Habitat for Humanity event!
